Upstream may refer to:
A general contractor (main contractor, prime contractor) is responsible for the day-to-day oversight of a construction site, management of vendors and trades, and the communication of information to all involved parties throughout the course of a building project.
The general contractor is a manager, and possibly a tradesman, employed by the client on the advice of the architect, engineer or the architectural technologist or the client him/herself if acting as the manager. A general contractor is responsible for the overall coordination of a project. A general contractor must first assess the project-specific documents (referred to as bid, proposal or tender documents). In the case of renovations, a site visit is required to get a better understanding of the project. Depending on the project delivery method, the contractor will submit a fixed price proposal or bid, cost plus price or an estimate. The general contractor considers the cost of home office overhead, general conditions, materials and equipment as well as the cost of labor to provide the owner with a price for the project.
Fossil fuels are fuels formed by natural processes such as anaerobic decomposition of buried dead organisms. The age of the organisms and their resulting fossil fuels is typically millions of years, and sometimes exceeds 650 million years. Fossil fuels contain high percentages of carbon and include coal, petroleum and natural gas. Other more commonly used derivatives of fossil fuels include kerosene and propane. They range from volatile materials with low carbon:hydrogen ratios like methane, to liquid petroleum to nonvolatile materials composed of almost pure carbon, like anthracite coal. Methane can be found in hydrocarbon fields, alone, associated with oil, or in the form of methane clathrates. The theory that fossil fuels formed from the fossilized remains of dead plants by exposure to heat and pressure in the Earth's crust over millions of years (see biogenic theory) was first introduced by Georg Agricola in 1556 and later by Mikhail Lomonosov in the 18th century.
The Energy Information Administration estimates that in 2007 the primary sources of energy consisted of petroleum 36.0%, coal 27.4%, natural gas 23.0%, amounting to an 86.4% share for fossil fuels in primary energy consumption in the world. Non-fossil sources in 2006 included hydroelectric 6.3%, nuclear 8.5%, and others (geothermal, solar, tidal, wind, wood, waste) amounting to 0.9%. World energy consumption was growing about 2.3% per year.
International development or global development is a wide concept concerning level of development on an international scale. It is the basis for international classifications such as developed country, developing country and least developed country. There are however many schools of thought and conventions regarding, which are the exact features constituting development of a country.
Historically it has been largely synonymous with economic development. Recently it is also often used in a holistic and multi-disciplinary context of human development as well as other concepts like competitiveness, quality of life or subjective well-being.
International development is different from simple development in that it is specifically composed of institutions and policies that arose after the Second World War. These institutions focus on alleviating poverty and improving living conditions in previously colonised countries.
Although international relations and international trade have existed for many hundreds of years, it is only in the past century that international development theory emerged as a separate body of ideas. More specifically, it has been suggested that 'the theory and practice of development is inherently technocratic, and remains rooted in the high modernist period of political thought that existed in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War'. Throughout the 20th century, before the concept of international development became a common word, four aspects were used to describe the idea:
Gas is one of the four fundamental states of matter (the others being solid, liquid, and plasma). A pure gas may be made up of individual atoms (e.g. a noble gas like neon), elemental molecules made from one type of atom (e.g. oxygen), or compound molecules made from a variety of atoms (e.g. carbon dioxide). A gas mixture would contain a variety of pure gases much like the air. What distinguishes a gas from liquids and solids is the vast separation of the individual gas particles. This separation usually makes a colorless gas invisible to the human observer. The interaction of gas particles in the presence of electric and gravitational fields are considered negligible as indicated by the constant velocity vectors in the image. One type of commonly known gas is steam.
The gaseous state of matter is found between the liquid and plasma states, the latter of which provides the upper temperature boundary for gases. Bounding the lower end of the temperature scale lie degenerative quantum gases which are gaining increasing attention. High-density atomic gases super cooled to incredibly low temperatures are classified by their statistical behavior as either a Bose gas or a Fermi gas. For a comprehensive listing of these exotic states of matter see list of states of matter.

July 2017 - Contractors "Land & Water" moving mud hoppers from the dredging site (on the eastern cannel below the Paritng) upstream to near Wainlodes. The eastern channel from the Parting to Gloucester receives vast quantities of tidal silt whenever there are high tides which cross the weirs at Llanthony and Maisemore. As the channel silts up, the subsequent outflow of tide and river become less powerful to scour the deposits back into the estuary. Without large tanker craft moving through the navigation channel, the speed of flow past the Quay at Gloucester has significantly decreased from running speed to walking pace. This now leads on occasions to large tidal flotsam being stranded or taking considerable time before the ebbing tide, combined with river flow, clears the blockage. Watch...

RULES & REGULATIONS MADE CLEAR Legitimate expectations versus vague assumptions The Contractors who come onto the Installations are undoubtedly skilled professionals, but whether they are aware of the rules and procedures operated by the organization they are carrying out work for is often open to question. In such cases, it is a good idea to make sure that they are informed -- before their arrival -- about what is expected of them and, conversely, what they themselves can expect. After all, safety, health, the environment and well-being are not just terms that belong only in disclaimers. 'Get To The Point' seeks to promote total clarity, especially in operations-related communications, whereby every ambiguity is completely eliminated.
Drilling the wells that produce the world’s energy is a team effort. There are three main types of companies that collaborate in developing these energy sources -- E&P companies, drilling contractors, and oilfield services and manufacturing companies. E&P companies seek the subsurface hydrocarbon resources, and thus oversee the well drilling process. They also manage hydrocarbon transportation, gas processing and, often, petroleum refining. E&P companies employ drilling contractors, which provide drilling rigs and crews. E&P companies also contract oilfield service companies for additional equipment and materials at the wellsite. Finally equipment manufacturers develop the rigs and gear needed drill and complete wells. Together, these companies comprise the upstream oil and gas segment. ...
On July 7, 2010, contractors hoisted five steel stop logs into place upstream of the lock to stem the flow of water through the canal. Over the coming weeks, a temporary dam will be constructed downstream of the lock to hold back the waters of the St. Marys River. Once both the stop logs and dam are in place, the water in between the two structures can be pumped out. A silt curtain will be hung downstream of the pumps to capture sediments that may have accumulated in the canal. Cette vidéo est aussi disponible en français https://youtu.be/ta0ubRu6XMY

Hemlock Dam was built in the Great Depression to provide water for a work camp in the area. The dam was build on Trout Creek, a tributary of the Wind River, in the Columbia River Gorge. The dam was removed in the summer of 2009 and over 12 miles of upstream habitat was restored for Columbia River Steelhead. The Forest Service worked with local contractors, conservation groups, the Bonneville Power Administration, federal agencies and native tribes to secure funding for the dam removal and complete this ambitious restoration project. The Crag Law Center worked with the Gifford Pinchot Task Force to ensure that the project moved forward smoothly. Crag intervened in a challenge to the water quality certification for the project and contended that the Washington Department of Ecology had c...
